The Presets - Apocalypso (Modular)

Australia's Presets (Julian Hamilton & Kim Moyes, formerly of Prop) succeed where similar acts like Codec & Flexor fail so miserable, in that they can sing over techno and not sound like total shit. Apocalypso more or less picks up where 2006's Beams left off, upping the ante this time around with vastly improved production and beefed-up sound. Openers Kicking and Screaming and My People take a page from the Soulwax playbook with wall-of-sound synths and bass, while the remainder of the album follows their previous trajectory of funked-out post-house and neo no-wave. If only Underworld were still this good... (CP) 4.5/5
