Divine Brown - The Love Chronicles (Warner)

It's hard out here for a Canadian soul singer, especially ones who can really sing, because their talent rarely translates onto their albums. Divine Brown is a beast live, but her sophomore project is only marginally less disappointing than her debut. It has got to sting that during her absence between the two albums, Jully Black totally robbed her of her concept and ran away with it, much like when R. Kelly jacked Aaron Hall's style. Bright spots come courtesy of her chemistry with Slakah the Beatchild, who is a national treasure, but lyrically, the effort is elementary and disjointed. (ALM) 3/5
