Jamie Lidell - Jim (Warp)

Think Stevie Wonder's early funk, Sam Cook's depth of feeling and Tina Turner as she shaped rock and roll in the crucible of soul, and you've got an idea of Jamie Lidell's latest and just where it locates itself on the R&B timeline. There's not the slightest whiff of anything but pure, undiluted soul of the finest quality on the eponymous Jim, even though Gonzales contributes piano, and Peaches takes a turn on backing vocals on Hurricane. Little Bit of Feelgood delivers on its promise, as does the rest of this album. You'd have to be dead inside not to fall for Jim. (LC) 4.5/5
