San Francisco’s Thao and co. recruit some extra friends (like Andrew Bird, Laura Veirs and Decemberists’ Jenny Conlee) for their latest and third LP. Lyrically, Thao expounds effortlessly on the hardships of human interaction and tough break-ups, but like a swallow stuck in the back of her throat, her voice is a little melancholic and dappled with the sweetest rage. While underneath her seductive phrasing, the band, a virtual get-together of talented musicians, drive out some serious hand-clapping and catchy rhythms.
