Le MAI / Double Up
by Angelica LeMinh ] Inquiring minds want to know: what is it? A theatre? A gallery? Both. And from there, the layers just keep peeling, like a really artistic onion. In this intercultural setting, each piece/exhibit embodies multiple forms, content, language and media. A secret treasure buried in the Mcgill “ghetto,” the gallery is always a great spot to get some (free!) food for thought, and their productions always feature high-calibre artists. Take it from a skeptic, they can make a modern dance believer out of almost anyone, as recent viewers of sold-out hip-hop fusion show Retrospek (choreographed by Alexandra “Spicey” Lande) can vouch for. Known for their partnerships with upstairs neighbours Black Theatre Workshop (d’bi.young.anitafrika’s piece “blood[claat]: one oomaan story” runs March 26-April 13), and with the Festival Acces Asie (they serve as a venue for exclusive shows and exhibits during May’s Asian Heritage Month celebration) amongst countless others, the MAI has been flippin’ all the scripts since its inception in May 1999. For complete details, you can always pick up their program during the Nuit Blanche, which promises to be a night filled with action. [ MAI (Montreal Arts Interculturels) Partager cet article
