It all started last October, in a dingy motel room on the wrong side of town. Now, more than 7 months later, the collective rapidly becoming known to Montreal as The Room 22 has doubled in size and tripled in mandate.
Consisting of six young Montrealers representing an up-and-coming generation that, as co-founder Marie Jane mentions, has “a growing need for change, progress and a statement” that it could identify to, they took it upon themselves to embody this general longing and remedy to it in every way they could. The members of The Room 22, who revere art in all its forms and each play a very generic yet crucial role in the running of the collective, as is explained in their manifesto, found an original way to coalesce music, literature, photography and cinema in an intuitive, united manner. In member Alex’s words, “our goal is to create a certain synergy with the artistic talents of each of us”.
The Room 22’s colourful blog, which is more of a vehicle of their thoughts and influences than anything else, portrays a myriad of different influences – from Bergman to Bardot – defining their unique style and passions. They primarily organise events that could essentially be classified as a party, but that merge into a concert, a film screening, a photo shoot or an art exhibit, transcending the conventional and shifting their guests’ comfort zone into a whole new, unexplored one.
After taking over Vinyl with an incredible amount of success on the 26th of February, having transformed the ordinarily grungy bar into something capable of challenging Warhol’s famed factory, The Room 22 is back with a new event that sounds just as promising as the last. In collaboration with The Fix, The Room 22 is presenting Friction; a vernissage of artwork by Megan Schwartz, Julie R. Cuerrier and Marie Jane, beginning at 7pm on March 27th at Coda Social Club. The exhibit will be followed by a signature party with dub-step beats provided by Duvall and Mad Kids, partly consisting of the collective’s very own Zach, and the presentation of several custom made projections.
When questioned about how they deal with unexpected incidents, Linny, the latest addition to the group, answers that “the Room 22 is an incident”, which goes to show just how welcoming the collective is of the very bright and unforeseen future that awaits them as one of Montreal’s most important expanding collectives.
